Centennial Honors College

HONORS GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS

The Honors College offers grants and scholarships to current honors students who are in good standing (have completed at least one honors course). Honors students are notified via WIU email when the application is open, usually in the spring.

Grants
Study Abroad Honors Grant

Award: Up to $500 / Once per academic year

Criteria:

  • Good standing in the Centennial Honors College
  • Demonstrated progress toward the completion of honors requirements
  • A completed “Descriptive Proposal” form with required signatures
  • a letter of support from a full time faculty member

Honors Research Grant

Award: Not to exceed $200 / Once per academic year

Criteria:

  • Good standing in the Centennial Honors College
  • Demonstrated progress toward the completion of honors requirements
  • Students must have a departmentally approved research project with a faculty research advisor and faculty research committee where relevant

Annette Homer Travel Grant

Award: $500 - $1,000 (depending on destination)

Criteria:

  • Be a member in good standing of the Centennial Honors College
  • Have applied and been accepted to a WIU authorized Study Abroad program or WIU faculty led travel course
  • Preference given to honors studnets planning to take a General Honors (GH) travel course
  • Preference given to those who demonstrate financial need
  • Supporting documents required:
    • Two page (minimum) typed essay explaining what you hope to learn during your travel-study experience

Scholarships & Awards
Charles H. "Chick" & Barbara Joan Flack Pre-Law Scholarship

Award: $1,250 ($625 in fall and spring of following academic year) 

Criteria:

  • Good standing in the Centennial Honors College
  • Must be returning to WIU as a full-time undergraduate student the following academic year
  • Demonstrate intent to attend law school and practice law
  • Preference will be given to applicants from West Central Illinois
  • Financial need is considered
  • Supporting documents required:
    • Upload with your application: Two page (minimum) typed essay discussing your plans to study and practice law and why
    • Ask at least one faculty member to email a letter of recommendation directly to honors@wiu.edu

 

Keith Webb Memorial Scholarship

Award: $1,500 ($750 in fall and spring of following academic year)

Criteria:

  • Have a minor in pre-law
  • Have a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Be in good judicial standing
  • Demonstrate intent to attend law school and practice law
  • Must be returning to WIU as full-time undergraduate student the following academic year
  • Preference will be given to current sophomores and juniors 
  • Supporting documents required:
    • Upload with your application: Two page (minimum) typed essay discussing your plans to study and practice law and why
    • Ask at least one faculty member to email a letter of recommendation directly to honors@wiu.edu
Dan and Laura Webb Pre-Law Scholarship

Award: $10,000 ($5,000 in fall and spring of following academic year)

Criteria:

  • Member in good standing of the Centennial Honors College
  • Must be returning to WIU as a full-time undergraduate student the following academic year
  • Pursuing coursework leading to a career in law (pre-law, political science, etc.)
  • Demonstrate strong potential for attending law school and practicing law
  • Demonstrate leadership in the field of Pre-Law
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA
  • Supporting documents required:
    • Upload with your application: Two page (minimum) typed essay demonstrating your commitment to the study and practice of law and highlighting your leadership in the field
    • Ask at least two faculty members to email letters of recommendation directly to honors@wiu.edu
Maakestad/Wolf Scholarship

Award: $2,500 ($1,250 in fall and spring of following academic year)

Criteria:

  • Member in good standing of the Centennial Honors College
  • Must be a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior at WIU when the award is disbursed
  • Minimum 3.6 GPA
  • Have completed the equivalent of one Honors class
  • Be in good judicial standing
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate writing ability
  • Supporting documents required:
    • Upload with your application: Two page (minimum) typed essay on the following topic, "Choose an experience from your life and explain how it has influenced your personal development and/or character."
    • Ask at least one member of faculty, staff or administration to email a letter of recommendation directly to honors@wiu.edu
Ernest J. Codilis Jr. Pre-Law Scholarship

Award: $10,000 ($5,000 in fall and spring of following academic year)

Criteria:

  • Actively pursuing the Pre-Law Honors minor through the Centennial Honors College
  • Enrolled full-time at WIU
  • Full-time senior standing at WIU at time of award
  • Have at least a 3.0 GPA at WIU
  • Demonstrate solid record of extracurricular participation- leadership preferred
  • Demonstrate solid record of campus and/or community service
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Supporting documents required:
    • Ask at least two faculty members to email letters of recommendation directly to honors@wiu.edu
Martin Dupuis Leadership Award for Historically Underrepresented Communities

Award: $1,300 (lump sum in fall semester)

Criteria:

  • Must be a member of a historically underrepresented community
  • Demonstrate excellence in leadership at WIU
  • Preference given to a student returning to WIU as a full-time junior
  • Good standing in the Honors College
  • Supporting documents required:
    • Upload with your application: Two page (minimum) typed essay explaining what you have learned or gained from your leadership activities
    • Ask at least one member of faculty, staff or administration to email a letter of recommendation directly to honors@wiu.edu
