Sponsored and organized by the Centennial Honors College, the Annual Pre-Law Symposium provides an excellent opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to learn about law school while being introduced to important legal issues by current law students who are WIU alumni and practicing law professionals. The event is open and free to the WIU community. Students interested in the study of law and those in classes addressing legal and ethical issues are encouraged to attend.

 Keynote Speaker
Judge John L. Hauptman

Judge John L. Hauptman was born on February 19, 1953 in Bloomington, Illinois. He was graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1971 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Illinois University in 1975. In 1978, he graduated from The John Marshall Law School with a Juris Doctor degree. 


Judge Hauptman began his legal career serving as an Assistant State's Attorney from 1978 to 1984. He then entered private practice with Nelson, Kilgus, Richey & Hauptman in Morrison, Illinois where he was employed until 1997 when was appointed as an Associate Circuit Judge for the 14th Judicial Circuit. In 2004, he was elected Circuit Judge in Whiteside County and served until his retirement in 2016. 

On December 1, 2021, the Illinois Supreme Court assigned Judge Hauptman to the Appellate Court for the 3rd District to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Vicki Wright.
