Leland Essay Contest

The Leland Essay Contest rewards the best writers in the Western Writing Program. All students in ENG 100, 180, 280, and GH 101 are eligible to enter. Students may submit one essay per course taken in Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Fall 2021.

Students may provide an additional submission in the multimodal writing category even if that submission comes from the same course as the essay submission. Submissions in the multimodal category should be work completed for ENG 100, 180, 280, and GH 101 that contains more than one mode of communication (alphabetic text, visual text, aural text, etc.). Examples include brochures, podcasts, and websites. 

Contest winners are published online and used as readings in many composition courses. Winners in each category get a monetary prize:

  • First place: $150
  • Second place: $100
  • Third place: $50

Current Submission Requirements:

  2. Sign in with your WIU email
  3. Read the contest rules/procedures
  4. Fill out contact information for your submissions
  5. Attach a copy of your completed entry or entries, following the requirements (make sure to submit to the appropriate course as indicated on the submission form)
  6. Individuals will be limited one essay per course (one ENG 100/one ENG 180/one ENG 280/one GH 101) plus one entry in the multimodal writing category.
  7. Electronically sign and date the form. Incomplete or unsigned forms will not be processed
  8. Submit this form and your entry or entries by the deadline stated on the submission form
