The Student Honors Association invited international students to the annual International Dinner at the Newman Center in early November. After an hour and a half of preparation, the dinner was served to about fifty international and honors students. Everyone enjoyed spaghetti, salad, Italian bread, lemonade and ice tea while also enjoying one another’s company. Students from India, Bolivia, Australia, and Sweden, not only dined in the cheerful atmosphere, but also shared games of pool and foosball with their hosts. Everyone agreed that this was a great evening!

Also in November, the Centennial Honors College presented the University Honors Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Address. Victor Da Rosa, Professor of Sociology at the University of Ottawa, presented “The Challenges of Multiculturalism: Cape Verde as a Case Study” in the Leslie F. Malpass Library Garden Lounge. Professor Da Rosa captivated the audience with a cultural history of the islands as a case study for the long history of globalization. Using music, Powerpoint slides, and an extensive question-and-answer session, he provided a learning experience in history, geography, and popular culture to show how these small and uninhabited islands became a nation of more than 400,000 that has exchanged influences with Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. A reception in the Centennial Honors College followed; in attendance were Provost Jack Thomas; Professor Emeritus Sterling Kernek, former director of the University Honors Program; Terry Rodenberg, Director of the Center for International Studies; as well as other University administrators, faculty, faculty emeriti, and students.

These and other stories will appear in the November/December issue of the Centennial Honors College Newsletter. Despite the world-wide economic forecast, the students, staff, and faculty of the Honors College continue to use their resources for excellence. Click here to access the Centennial Honors College website and forthcoming Newsletter.
