MACOMB, IL- Campus Recreation at Western Illinois University is hosting "Leatherneck Games," from April 19- 23. The five-day, all-encompassing functional fitness competition will test the participants in all aspects of fitness, with the goal of crowning one male and one female as "Fittest On Campus."

One workout competition will be held each day that week. The final workout Friday, April 23 is a secret workout that will be held on Vince Grady Field. The workouts will be done in person.

Registration is $15, and competitors who signed up by April 7 are guaranteed an official Leatherneck Games t-shirt. The fee can be paid at the front desk of the Recreation Center by cash or check.

During each of the first four days, there will be a time block in which contestants can sign up for a time slot to come in and do their workout. These times may vary depending on the number of contestants signed up. If contestants are not able to make it during the scheduled time block, they can make an appointment to come in individually and complete their workout.

Associate Director of the Campus Recreation Brian Thomas said that with the popularity of CrossFit and functional fitness competitions in recent years, he thought this idea would bring a new and exciting type of competitive event on campus.

"We figured, with a lot of the programming and recreational opportunities being canceled this past year, it would be nice to put something new and fresh together for the WIU community to get excited about," Thomas said. "If not for the events of this past year, we likely would have held it sooner. Things are now getting to a point where we can do things like this again with the proper guidelines and safety measures in place, so we decided to go ahead and give it a try. We have the right mix of staff, and it just seems like the right time for it." he added.
