- Description: Members of the Western Illinois University and Macomb-area communities are invited to take part in the Martin Luther King Jr. Remembrance Day at WIU, beginning at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20.
The event, which will be held in the Multicultural Center (MCC) on the Macomb campus, will feature a presentation on the Rev. Dr. King's legacy, a candlelight vigil and a moment of silence and reflection.
The program is sponsored by the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity (WIU's Eta Eta Chapter). Tuesday, Jan. 15 would have been King's 91st birthday. He is remembered as a prominent civil rights activist who was an advocate of nonviolent protest and global liberation.
"Our coming together to work to build community is how we move forward," said Carl Ervin, MCC program coordinator.
Macomb's Mt. Calvary Church of God in Christ will host the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March and Day of Celebration, beginning with a march at 9:30 a.m. Individuals interested in participating should meet meet at 9:15 a.m. in the parking lot on the east side of Macomb's Courthouse Square.
The event will culminate with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration Program at Mt. Calvary Church of God in Christ (1500 E. Pierce St.) at 10:30 a.m., featuring keynote speaker WIU Associate Vice President for Student Services Emeritus Earl Bracey.
