- Description: MACOMB, IL – Casa Latina and the Día De Los Muertos planning committee will hold “Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead),” at 6p.m. - 9p.m. Friday, Nov 1 in the Western Illinois University Multicultural Center.
Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is a celebration in the Latinx culture where people honor their loved ones who have passed away and a time to reunite the living and the dead.
Activities will include music, face painting, skull painting, loteria, food, bracelet making and special performances. This event will celebrate Día De Los Muertos tradition with a display of an altar to honor those who have passed away. The altar will be located in Casa Latina’s Lounge.
An Alumni of Western Illinois University and sister of Lambda Theta Alpha Carmen Guzman said, “ I believe this event is important because it will help promote unity amongst the WIU community, to help honor our departed family members and friends who have passed away through the Altar. People will be able to collaborate and grief while creating an ofrenda (an offering)”
The Día De Los Muertos celebrations is based on the belief that the souls of the ones gone can come back to this world on this day. The Day of the Dead altar is the most prominent feature in the celebration because they show the souls the way back to their home. Altars make the souls (almas) feel welcomed and show them they have not been forgotten.
