First Year Experience (FYE) - Spring 2008 Survey Results

Spring 2008 represents the end of Western's 3rd year with the FYE program. This provides a the ability to show trends across Spring semesters, similar to what was shown in reporting the Fall 2007 results.

  • While Western remains a top choice in where WIU freshmen wanted to attend college, this was even more so for freshmen in Spring 2008, who also should a slightly greater motivation to graduate from Western in concert with a very strong motivation to graduate from college.

  • Western's FYE courses provide freshmen with a small class size that encourages discussion, participation, and getting to know their instructor. In fact, the these positive attributes have increased during the 3-year period, with Spring freshmen reporting even smaller classes, more discussion, and greater faculty encouragement of different points of view, although they are reporting less ease in discussing personal concerns with their FYE instructor.

  • Incorporating the use of the common reading, Fast Food Nation in Fall 2005, Class Matters in Fall 2006, and Last Child in the Woods in Fall 2007 continues to be a challenge for the FYE program, seemingly getting more difficult each year. Hopefully the selection of Smashed for 2008-09 can reverse this trend.

  • Western has had moderate success in meeting the goals of the FYE program, a task made difficulty by the widespread and diverse program effort. As Western reviews the efforts and success of the FYE program after its initial 3-year trial, the overall goals of the program and the ability of the program to meet these goals should be reviewed with a discussion of the most effective way to make desired improvements.

  • With more than 95% of new freshmen living in the residence halls, this presents a valuable opportunity to help students were they live.Residence hall staff have been successful with their efforts to increase the impact of residence hall programming and more fully integrate it into the FYE program .
