Veterans and Service Members Appreciation Week Events and Programs

Students from local elementary schools have created posters in appreciation of our veterans and service members. Posters are on display throughout campus. Special thanks to St. Paul Elementary and Lincoln Elementary, both in Macomb, Bushnell-Prairie City Elementary, Drive Studio of Dance in Macomb, and Roseville Kid’s Place, as well as PACT Head Start, Wesley Child Care Center, Catch A Star Learning Center and WIU Infant and Preschool Center all in Macomb.

 

November 1 – 30, 2013

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. - Fallen Soldiers Scholarship applications are being accepted for the spring 2014 term. For eligibility guidelines or to apply, visit wiu.edu/veterans. The deadline to submit application materials for the spring 2014 term is November 30, 2013.

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. - Students, staff and faculty members who are veterans or service members are encouraged to submit 4x6 or 6x4 photos that will become part of a permanent photo display at the Veterans Resource Center. Veterans or service members submitting photos by November 11 will be eligible for a drawing to receive a free dinner for two, compliments of Magnolias. Photos will continue to be accepted on an ongoing basis.

 

Monday – Wednesday, November 4 – 6, 2013

11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. - The WIU Veterans Club and the Organization of Adult Students for Interaction and Support (OASIS) will distribute ribbons in support of Operation Yellow Ribbon. The yellow ribbons can be picked up in the University Concourse while supplies last.

 

Monday – Thursday, November 4 – 7, 2013

10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. - The Student Veterans Organization at the Quad Cities campus will be having events each day at the Riverfront Campus. There will be displays in the hallways from each branch of the military, as well as presentations in nearby classrooms by speakers from the U.S. Army on Monday, the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps on Tuesday, the U.S. Air Force on Wednesday, and the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday.

 

Monday – Friday, November 4 – 8, 2013

8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. - Present your military ID at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course and receive a 25% discount on merchandise or free green fees with the rental of a golf cart.

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. - ROTC Cadets will retire worn flags which can be dropped off at ROTC/Military Science in Horrabin Hall 103 or at the Veterans Resource Center, 333 North Ward Street, Macomb. Another drop-off location is the American Legion at 221 East Washington Street.

 

Monday – Monday, November 4 – 11, 2013

8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. - The Women's Center will have a Salute to Women in the Military display in the Multicultural Center first floor lobby (Monday through Thursday). On Friday, the display is available for viewing from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. - Treat your favorite veteran or service member to lunch at the Knoblauch Café at 239 Knoblauch Hall. Meals are $7.00 per person and will include a dessert and beverage. The menu for Tuesday is lasagna/vegetarian lasagna, mixed green salad, breadstick, and pecan tassies with whipped cream. Call 309-298-1085 to make a reservation. Carry-outs are also available.  3:00 p.m. - Participate in a veteran and service member student panel in the Multicultural Center multipurpose room. A group of male and female service members and veterans representing several military branches will discuss their military, educational and personal experiences as they transitioned to Western. Panel members are enthusiastic about sharing their individual insights and are prepared to answer questions from the audience.

 

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. - The WIU Women’s Center will hold a Blood Drive in the Multicultural Center Multipurpose and Activity Rooms. It is co-sponsored by Feminist Action Alliance, Campus Girl Scouts, and OASIS. First-time donors are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone who has ever donated and those who may be eligible to donate. While advance registration is encouraged, walk-ins are welcome.

 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. - Difficult Conversations 2: Stereotyping Each Other: Experiencing the Urban/Rural Divide on Campus will take place at the Multicultural Center. This conversation looks at tensions felt by students on both sides of the urban/rural divide, who bring their personal cultural backgrounds to their campus experiences and interactions. Faculty, students, and staff are all welcome and encouraged to attend. Registration is not required. Light refreshments will be served. Find more details here.

 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. - The Veterans Club will be showing the movie Restrepo, a 90-minute documentary by National Geographic that follows a platoon on their deployment to Afghanistan in the Korengal Valley. There will be a question and answer session following the showing. The event will take place in the University Union Sandburg Theatre.

 

Friday, November 8, 2013

5:00 p.m. - Lead Series on Conflict Resolution Styles, presented by Andrew Aviles, IFC President and Koryna Felt, Graduate Student, will take place at the Student Organization Center in the University Union. The purpose of this program is to give students the tools they need to go about managing different types of conflicts and to gain a better understanding of their own conflict/resolution style.

 9:00 p.m. – Midnight - Rocky After Dark: Rocky-N-Roller Skate at the Spencer Student Recreation Center.  Come enjoy an evening full of skating and music!  FREE for all WIU students!

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. - Family Skate Saturday at the Spencer Student Recreation Center. Activity is free and skates are provided. Open to all Western Illinois University students, faculty, staff, administrators and their families!

 

Monday, November 11, 2013

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. - University Union Bookstore is having a Veteran's Day Sale. Present your military ID and receive 20% off all clothing and gift items.

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. - WIU-QC will be holding a Veterans Breakfast at the Riverfront Campus, in conference rooms 103 and 104. The breakfast is for veterans and service members plus one guest. An email was sent previously to Quad Cities’ veterans and service members asking students to submit photos for a slideshow during the breakfast.

10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. - The Student Veterans Organization at the Quad Cities Campus will be having a display in the Riverfront Campus hallways, as well as speakers in nearby classrooms to discuss Veterans Day.

10:30 a.m. - The Macomb VFW will be conducting a Veterans Day ceremony. There will be free soup and sandwiches, courtesy of the Auxiliary. This event is open to the public. Firing squad will be at 11:00 a.m. The VFW will have flags displayed around Chandler Park.

11:00 a.m. - The Veterans and Service Members Tribute will be conducted at the Sherman Hall flagpole. Join President Jack Thomas, Vice President of Student Services Gary Biller, WIU Veterans Club President Calvin Smith, SGA Speaker of the Senate Michael Quigley, the ROTC Cadets, WIU School of Music Professor Bruce Briney, and music major Hakeem Howard as we honor our veterans and service members. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Sherman Hall Auditorium, third floor.

12:00 p.m. - The Sherman Hall Bell Tower will play a medley of anthems as a tribute to each of our military service branches.

5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. - WIU-QC will be having a showing of "Bad Voodoo's War,” a PBS Frontline documentary in which a platoon of National Guard soldiers use personal video cameras to show the war through their eyes. The documentary will be shown at the Riverfront Campus, in conference rooms 103 and 104. Following the showing, there will be a panel discussion, bringing together veterans and service members to share their experience, and to hopefully have a dialogue with audience.

5:30 p.m. - The American Legion will have a Veterans Day dinner. The meal is free to members of the American Legion who have dues paid through 2014. There will also be a brief program.
