Policy on Services for Students with Disabilities
Western Illinois University complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. According to Section 504 "no otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States… will solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance…"
The University's Disability Resource Center (DRC) assumes responsibility for facilitating the provision of academic adjustments, auxiliary aids, and other services. DRC requires sufficient advance notice to allow for a reasonable period in which to evaluate requests. Students should complete the steps below well in advance of anticipated need for services.
- Students must be admitted to and/or enrolled in the University.
- Students should contact DRC in Memorial Hall 143, (309) 298-2512 or at firstname.lastname@example.org to request services.
- Students should submit a Request for Services Form and documentation from a qualified professional that includes a diagnosis and supports requests for modifications. Such documentation is subject to approval by the University. Request for Services Forms can be found at SJP Website.
- The Director of the Disability Resource Center or his/her designees will decide on appropriate auxiliary aids or adjustments and services via an interactive process involving the student. These will be provided at no cost to the student.
Students who believe that they have experienced discrimination based on a disability can seek resolution through the University's Discrimination Grievance Procedure. Information and consultation on these procedures are available through the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access, Sherman Hall 203, (309) 298-1977. The Office of Equal Opportunity and Access assumes the responsibility for investigating students' complaints of discrimination on the basis of disability and ensuring the University's compliance with federal regulations.
