Alternative Spring Break

Cabbage Patch

Alternative Spring Break (ASB) provides the opportunity for students to plan, raise money, travel and help another community during spring break. In the past, ASB has traveled to Omaha, NE, Nashville, TN, Mobile, AL, Washington D.C., and New Orleans, LA.  Examples of past service projects include partnering with Habitat for Humanity, Hurricane Katrina Relief, and participating in an Urban Plunge program.

The out-of-pocket cost for the trip is only $50.  Please note that once you have committed to the trip, this money will be nonrefundable.  All participants commit to fundraising and weekly planning meetings leading up to the trip.

This year a group of nineteen students headed to Louisville, KY!  While we were in Louisville we volunteered with organizations like soup kitchens and resettlement agencies, places that worked with children in the foster care system and refugees, and Habitat for Humanity. We sorted donations, served food to the homeless, practiced English with refugees, helped build five different homes, gardened, landscaped, and did some demolition work.

Every day, we also had intentional conversations about the topics related to the different organizations we were helping. It was wonderful to see the students grow throughout the week both through their work and all the conversations with each other and the people we met along the way.
