Western Illinois Interactive Theatre
We are starting a new organization on the Western Illinois University campus through the Interpersonal Violence Prevention Initiative called Western Illinois Interactive Theatre (WIIT). This organization is designed to promote awareness as well as provide education on the following topics:
- Domestic violence
- Dating violence
- Sexual assault
The theatre group will be a performance group that does skits across WIU’s campus that will be interactive and entertaining for the WIU community. These skits are designed to demonstrate different scenarios that Western students face and what to do to prevent a potentially dangerous situation. The skits are designed to be interactive and encourage audience participation.
We are looking for anyone who is interested. So, if you think this sounds interesting or if you wish to gain acting experience, or if you simply have questions or ideas please contact us. We'd love to hear from you!
IVPI has contracted Theater Delta to advise and direct the development of WIIT.
While the video here shows how interactive theater is used in addressing education for medical staff rather than issues of interpersonal violence, it provides an example of the what the process may look like.
For more information about Theater Delta and the interactive theater process, visit their website.
"Theater Delta uses Interactive Theater – scripted and improvisational audience participatory theater – to promote dialogue and social change in communities around the globe. We believe that when people participate in creating drama on stage, they are more likely to explore and change personal attitudes and behaviors in their own lives."
