Frequently Asked Questions
I’m experiencing some academic difficulties, and I think I may have a disability. What should I do?
If you think you have a disability, we would be happy to talk with you about your concerns. Please call the Disability Resource Center office at 309-298-2512, or send us an email at email@example.com. We will set up an appointment and talk about the current issues, discuss campus resources that can provide evaluations for students, and decide together what the best course of action would be.
What kind of documentation do I need to provide?
You are the best source for the information we need. While we do rely on some third party documentation, it is imperative that we speak with you regarding your experiences in the educational environment.
When Disability Resource Center (DRC) reviews third-party documentation, we are looking for two key elements:
- The information is provided by an evaluator who is qualified to diagnose the condition.
- Documentation supports the requested accommodations.
The best way to provide the information needed by DRC is to share the Accommodation Support Form with your physician, psychologist, etc. DRC created this fill-in-the-blank form to assist professional evaluators in providing the information necessary to support a student’s request for disability accommodations at WIU. Although we must have disability documentation on file, the use of our form is not required, and you may submit documentation in other formats (e.g., doctor’s letters, psycho-educational reports, etc.).
I’ve submitted all of my information to DRC. What happens next? It’s time to schedule your Welcome appointment! Please call 309-298-2512 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule this appointment. If you are currently enrolled in courses at WIU, you can schedule a Welcome appointment at anytime during the semester, with the exception of final exam week. During your Welcome appointment, we will discuss services, accommodations, and documentation, DRC procedures for arranging accommodations, and how to best work with faculty members.
Once I’m registered with Disability Resource Center, how do I request accommodations from my instructors?
Every semester, you schedule a meeting with a DRC staff member to pick up your accommodation letters. You are then responsible for distributing the letters to faculty members and having a discussion about the accommodations needed to create an accessible classroom environment for the semester. The best way to do this is to meet with your instructors during office hours or by appointment, so that a meaningful, one-on-one discussion can occur.
**Please note that accommodations are not retroactive; it is important for students to make requests in a timely manner, so that we can plan accordingly.
