Family Matters

The transition to the post-secondary setting can be exciting and scary for families. Now is the time when students take the lead in making decisions and advocating for themselves. Once a student completes the DRC registration process, they decide who has access to information about their accommodations and services. DRC is happy to speak with family members about general office policy and procedures, but your student’s specific information will not be shared without her/his written consent. At this juncture, direct and honest communication between students and families is key.
How can families support student success?

  • Encouraging personal responsibility
  • Encouraging effective self-advocacy
  • Working with your student to foster trust in their decision-making skills
  • Decide with your student whether a consent form is necessary

Personal responsibility, prudent judgment, preparation and effective self-advocacy are the keys to success anywhere. Sharpening those skills begins here at WIU.
