Rec Events for Charities
- Each year, graduate assistants, student employees, and staff members from Campus Recreation work with other groups on campus to co-sponsor philanthropic events to benefit specific charity organizations.
Western Illinois University is home to the ORIGINAL Big Pink Volleyball! We work with Thompson Hall to hold the biggest and the best Big Pink Volleyball Tournament in the state to educate Western students about breast cancer and send donations to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and the McDonough District Hospital Mammogram Assistance Program. This year's program raised $8,342.88
to be split between the two charities. Overall the program has raised
- The eXtreme Dodgeball for Diabetes tournament is held in conjunction with National Residence Hall Honorary, and all proceeds are given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In 2014 we raised $533.50. All students are encouraged to participate. $533 was raised fall 2015 for the Illinois Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
- The International World Cup Soccer Tournament held in the fall and spring in conjunction with the Center for International Studies raises funds annual for various charities around the world. This year we raised $295 for Kimbra, one of the largest slums in Africa.
- Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement that raises money for local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Our Dance Marathon raises money for St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. Fundraising begins at the start of the school year and culminates with one final event, where participants dance for 12 hours, the same amount of time that the doctors spend on their feet. During the event, Miracle Families come and tell their stories to motivate dancers to keep going. The goal for this year's event is $70,000. The 2014 event raised $22,000 and the 2015 event raised $53,000. Become a Miracle Maker today!
