In a recent department poll, our students said that our strongest feature was the quality of classroom instruction. From your first course, to your last semester, you will be taught primarily by PhD sociologists and anthropologists. Most have published articles in leading professional journals. Several have published major books and monographs. Four of our faculty have won “Outstanding Teacher” Awards, others have been awarded “Outstanding Researcher” awards. Our faculty come from diverse academic, social, and ethnic backgrounds.
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology, together with the Department of Political Science and the Institute for Rural Affairs, operates the Western Survey Research Center (WSRC). The WSRC is a service outreach of the College of Arts and Sciences and engages in survey, public policy, and opinion research for the University, the Macomb community, and the region. The WSRC provides Sociology students with an opportunity to develop their research skills through hands-on experience.
In addition, our department partners with a variety of programs across campus, offering courses toward interdisciplinary minors in American Humanics, Environmental Studies, Forensic Science, Functional Morphology and Evolutionary Anatomy, Gerontology, International Studies, Law and Society, and Survey Research Methods, as well as offering credit to students participating in approved study abroad programs.
