Degrees at a Distance Program for Fire Fighters
National Fire Academy Certificates

Students enrolling in Degrees at a Distance Program (DDP) courses may obtain a variety of National Fire Academy certificates including:

• Certificate of Achievement
• Certificate of Graduation

Certificate of Achievement

Available to any student who successfully completes any DDP course at Western Illinois University, these certificates are the same as those awarded for resident courses at the NFA in Emmitsburg, Maryland. An application form for the certificate is included in the DDP course materials and must be submitted to the course instructor or the Non-Traditional Programs office.

Certificate of Graduation

Available to any student who earns the WIU Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts Degree and completes the seven core DDP courses and three additional courses in one of two areas of concentration for a total of 30 semester hours of credit.

• Fire Administration and Management
• Fire Prevention Technology

Requirements

The specific DDP course requirements to earn the Certificate of Graduation include a total of 10 courses; the seven core courses, plus three courses from one of the two concentrations.

The Seven Required Core Courses:

• Engineering 443: Fire Protection Structures and Systems Design
• LEJA 481: Advanced Fire Administration
• LEJA 482: Analytic Approaches to Public Fire Protection
• LEJA 483: Personnel Management for the Fire Service
• LEJA 484: Fire Prevention Organization and Management
• LEJA 485: Political and Legal Foundations of Fire Protection
• Sociology 488: Community and The Fire Threat

The Three additional courses (pick one concentration):

Fire Administration and Management Concentration

• Emergency Management 477: Disaster and Fire Defense Planning
• Emergency Management 478: Managerial Issues in Hazardous Materials
• Sociology 487: Application of Fire Research

Fire Prevention Technology Concentration

• Engineering 444 - Fire Dynamics
• LEJA 486 - Incendiary Fire Analysis and Investigation
• Psychology 481 - Fire-Related Human Behavior
