Program Details

General:  You are REQUIRED to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in this program. Proof of vaccination will be required prior to WIU registration.  Nagasaki University sits in downtown Nagasaki, a very unique city in Japan which kept its doors open to the outside world while the rest of Japan was closed for more than 250 years during the Edo Period. As a result, the city is truly multi-ethnic and multi-religious, and has been home for many strangers, starting from Chinese merchants, the Portuguese, the Jesuits and the Jews. There is an old saying in Southern Japan, which goes: "Go to Nagasaki and you see and experience the whole world." Many famous people like Helen Keller, Rabindranath Tagore, and Pope John Paul II have visited the city.

In addition to Nagasaki's unique history, especially that of Christianity, there is also the history of the atomic bomb. Any US students who are interested in peace will find the city most fascinating.

Entry Requirements: Students participating in a program shorter than 90 days do not need a visa to enter Japan. Students going for longer than 90 days must apply for a visa before entering the country. More information regarding visa requirements can be found here.

Health Insurance: It is a university policy that all WIU students who study abroad are either covered under WIU student health insurance OR have purchased the Patriot Travel Medical Insurance plan through IMG.
