This fall Western Illinois University-Quad Cities in cooperation with the East Moline School District, Moline/ Coal Valley School District, and the Rock Island School District will sponsor an English Language Conference for Illinois and Iowa administrators and teachers (k-12). This program is designed to touch on multiple facets of working with English Language Learners, for teachers who are not only in English Language Learner classrooms, but those who have an English Language learner in a general classroom setting. Sessions include “The Current Status of English Language Learners and New Developments,” "Undocumented Students and DACA,"“Beginning Spanish for Teachers,”  “Strategies for Literacy,” “Technology in the Classroom,” and a “Pre-Conference Refugee Simulation for Educators.”

Libia Gil, Illinois State Board of Education's Chief Education Officer

The keynote speaker for the event is Libia Gil, the Illinois State Board of Education’s Chief Education Officer. Libia Gil has served as the Assistant Deputy Secretary and Director for the Office of English Language Acquisition at the U.S. Department of Education under U.S. Secretaries of Education Arne Duncan and John King. In addition, she was Vice-President for Practice at the Collaborative for Academics, Social and Emotional Learning in Chicago. She has been a Senior Fellow and Managing Director at the American Institutes for Research (AIR), where she developed and co-led the AIR Center for English Language Learners.

Illinois educators are eligible for 4.5 professional development hours from ISBE.  Professional Development Hours, lunch, conference attendance, conference materials, and the pre-conference refugee simulation are all included in the registration cost of $69. Space is limited to 30 participants for the refugee simulation.

As part of the conference, participants will have the opportunity to become actively involved in a refugee simulation. The simulation will allow educators to experience what it is like for their students who are refugees seeking safety after leaving their home countries.  The simulation will be presented by World Relief on November 3rd on the WIU-QC Campus, on the campus grounds and within Riverfront Hall.

In addition to the refugee simulation, administrators are invited to attend a free administrators' breakfast with Libia Gil the morning of the conference.  Up to 15 school leaders will have the opportunity to engage in informal conversation with Dr. Gil.
