General Experimental Psychology Areas of Concentration

Students who wish to concentrate their program of studies in specific areas of interest may wish to consider the following suggested course clusters. These clusters of courses are not formal program specializations; rather, they are intended to serve as a guide to the possibilities of tailoring the program to meet individual needs. [Note: No more than 6 hours should come from the 400G level.]

Over 40% of the 32 hours required in this program are elective hours. Our graduates tell us that one of the most appealing features of the General Experimental Program is the flexibility available in tailoring a personalized curriculum to meet an individual's particular needs.

Clinical Psychology

The General Experimental Program is excellent preparation for advanced study in clinical psychology. Clinical psychology at the doctoral level increasingly focuses on the scientific aspects of the discipline. As a result, students who ultimately wish to obtain a clinical Ph.D. would most likely take a concentration of courses designed to improve their credentials in applying to these competitive programs.

In addition to the core courses of the General Experimental Program, concentrations in areas such as social/personality or cognitive psychology serve as excellent foundations on which doctoral training in clinical psychology may build. On an individual basis, students with clinical Ph.D. aspirations may be admitted to applied clinical courses offered as part of other graduate training in the Psychology Department. Individualized advising with faculty holding the clinical Ph.D. is available to all students whose eventual academic goal is the Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
