Donald W. “Bill” Griffin was appointed to the Western Illinois University Board of Trustees February 3, 2006. Griffin retired from WIU as a Professor of Geography and Director of the Institute for Regional and Community Studies (1971-1993). He holds a Ph.D. from Clark University (1963), an M.S. (1956) and B.S. (1955) from Illinois State University. Prior to coming to Western, he was a geography faculty member at the University of California-Los Angeles and Rhode Island College. He also served as a senior planner for the Worcester (MA) Planning Department, was a training officer for the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Commerce and was a military instructor for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
A native of Illinois and a long-time resident of Macomb, Griffin has served in a variety of professional and civic organizations. Griffin was the Director of Macomb Certified Cities project and served as Chair of Congressmen Lane Evans’ Citizens Task Force on the Hennepin Canal. He was the Chair of the editorial board of the Western Illinois Monograph Series and a member of the editorial board of Western Illinois Regional Studies. Griffin has served as the President of the Illinois Association of Regional Councils, as a member of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s Regional Advisory Committee and as Chair of the Western Illinois Regional Council.
He is currently a steering committee member of the Macomb Area Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, a LIFE (Learning is ForEver) volunteer instructor on the Hennepin Canal, Illinois Waterway and Upper Mississippi River. He is also a volunteer for the Loaves and Fishes food pantry, the McDonough County Habitat for Humanity and Macomb’s annual Gazebo Arts Festival.
