Goldfarb Selected for State Community Outreach Board
November 4, 2009
MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University President Al Goldfarb was recently appointed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn to serve on the new State of Illinois' Serve Illinois Commission.
Goldfarb is among 20 individuals who will serve on the commission, which is supported by the Illinois Department of Human Services. The commission's purpose is to enhance and support community volunteerism and administers the AmeriCorps Illinois program.
Members of the commission are appointed to three-year terms. Goldfarb is the only Illinois public university president serving on the commission. Nancy Jameson of Macomb, director of the West Central Illinois RSVP, was also named to the commission. Other members include administrators of volunteer-related agencies from across the state and select faculty from University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and DePaul University.
During his tenure as Western's 10th president, Goldfarb oversaw WIU's strategic planning process, which identified social responsibility as one of the University's core values. Because of the University's commitment to service, Western was recently named to the President's Honor Roll for Community Service and Volunteerism.
Goldfarb also served as co-chair of Illinois Campus Compact, part of a national coalition of nearly 1,000 college and university presidents representing some five million students, who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education.
"It's a privilege to be selected to the Serve Illinois Commission. I believe my appointment is due to the significant service activities our campus communities undertake in Macomb and the Quad Cities in order to better our communities and enrich the lives of others," Goldfarb said.
