Ribbon Cut for WIU Grand Entrance Sign
December 19, 2013
MACOMB, IL - A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday, Dec. 13 for Western Illinois University's new grand entrance sign at the University Drive campus entrance.
University, state and local dignitaries cut the ribbon at the new sign, which was constructed by Leander Construction, of Canton and paid for by Student Facility Enhancement fees. The WIU Student Government Association approved the construction project earlier this year.
"This is a very exciting time in the history of Western Illinois University. We have reached another milestone by creating a grand entrance sign for our University. This is just one example of what is yet to come. We have goals and a vision for this University, and with all of our efforts, we will achieve them," said WIU President Jack Thomas. "I want to especially thank our students for supporting this campus beautification project. The Student Government Association approved the use of Student Enhancement Fees to fund this initiative, which is part of our campus Master Plan. I would also like to thank Mayor Mike Inman for helping us with the transfer of land and for his ongoing support for this project."
The sign was designed by the WIU Campus Master Planning Committee and the Farnsworth Group to help designate the area as the primary entrance to the Macomb campus. The design is meant to replicate the architectural features of Sherman Hall, including the "Western brick blend," stone masonry angles and a sphere to make the sign a cohesive part of the University.
