Fashion Class Assists Macomb Stores with Special Events
November 13, 2013
MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University students in Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising and Hospitality (DFMH) Assistant Professor Susan Creasey’s Fashion Promotions class are getting hands-on experience in organizing and promoting retail events in cooperation with local businesses.
Students in Fashion Promotions 373 will be on hand at Nostalgia Decorating’s grand re-opening Saturday, Nov. 16 to greet customers, coordinate refreshments, distribute coupons and direct customers to the store owner, Lara Dively, to get their questions answered. But even before the doors open at 10 a.m. Saturday, the class has been busy behind the scenes promoting the day, which includes a special Vera Bradley event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"We have been speaking to other classes in the department, e-mailing faculty, posting flyers around town, talking to sororities and we will be guests on The Dog radio station Thursday to promote the event," said Ciara Isley, a senior DFMH major from Rushville.
This semester Creasey's class has also worked with Maurices to recruit and style models for a float in the WIU Homecoming Parade, and hosted a "Creepy Couture" fashion show creating affordable costumes with apparel and items from Encore, The Crossing Thrift Store and Project Hope. Recently, the students hosted a fashion show at CATO in Macomb.
"We really appreciate our local retailers working with us to provide real world experiences for our students," Creasey said. "These opportunities allow the students to put what they learn in the classroom into practice."
