WIU Libraries: $5,000 Grant to Purchase Books for Nursing Students

April 22, 2013

MACOMB, IL – Thanks to the efforts of a nursing librarian at Western Illinois University Libraries, Western will be able to purchase $5,000 worth of health sciences books for students studying in the WIU School of Nursing.

According to University Libraries Dean Phyllis Self, WIU Libraries Instructor/Nursing Librarian Daneen Richardson received the grant award via the Illinois State Library through the "Back to Books" program administered by Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White.

"We are extremely fortunate that the Illinois State Library has awarded WIU Libraries a grant of $5,000 to purchase needed library materials for our nursing students. Daneen is to be commended for her work with the WIU School of Nursing and submitting and managing this grant," Self noted.

"Our students and faculty will benefit greatly from the additions provided through the award by the Illinois State Library," added Lea Monahan, WIU School of Nursing director and professor. "Nursing is an evidence-based practice discipline, so library materials are very important in continuing to build evidence for practice."

According to an April 16 press release, White said he was pleased to be able to award the grants to libraries across the state.

"Our libraries perform so many essential tasks, but at their core, what our libraries do best is make books and other materials available to patrons," he stated.

Through the "Back to Books" program, White has awarded more than $1 million in grants to 230 Illinois libraries to acquire fiction and/or nonfiction books, learning CDs and DVDs and other educational materials.

Awards range from $2,500-$5,000 per library and are made possible by a combination of funds from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and state of Illinois library funds.
