WIU Veterans Resource Center Plans Webinar

March 29, 2013

MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois University Veterans Resource Center, in coordination with Minority Health Month, will host a webinar, “Keeping LGBTQA Students Safe: 10 Strategies for Reducing Targeted Violence on Campus" from 2 -3 p.m. Tuesday, April 2 in the Multicultural Center Multipurpose Room.

Craig Tollini, associate professor of sociology and anthropology, will serve as program moderator.

A report from "Campus Pride" titled, "2010: The State of Higher Education for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People," sheds light on the safety situation for LGBTQA students on campus.

Sue Rankin, of Penn State, completed a 30-year study and concluded that college campuses are not any safer for LGBTQA students today than they were 30 years ago. Only 7 percent of colleges have resources available for this population, despite the fact that having a visible and identifiable LGBTQA community with administrative support is key to reducing bullying and violence against these students on campus.

This webinar will look at Rankin’s research along with 10 strategies for reducing targeted violence on campus that offices can use to serve LGBTQA students effectively in their day-to-day practice.

Participants will explore ally programs, learn about the psychological damage for students individually and collectively, and identify practical strategies designed to increase safety for LGBTQA students on campus. Participants will also learn about important regional and national resources including Safe Zone/Safe Space programs.

All students, faculty, staff members and administrators are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact the Veterans Resource Center at (309) 298-3505 or email VeteransResources@wiu.edu.
