Accreditation Extended for WIU Clinical/Community Mental Health M.S. Degree Program

MACOMB, IL – The Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) has extended the accreditation of Western Illinois University's master's degree in Clinical/Community Mental Health for another 10 years, through August 2027.

The program is housed in the WIU Department of Psychology and has been accredited by MPCAC since 2007.

"Accreditation for our Clinical/Community Mental Health master's degree program reflects the degree to which we provide a rigorous education to advanced psychology students, in the context of small cohorts and intensive classroom experiences," said Psychology Department Chair Karen Sears. "Our faculty take great pride in a program of study that provides students the knowledge and skills required to deliver much needed clinical services to the community. Upon completion of this master's degree program, our graduates successfully compete for high demand careers in the mental health services field."

To achieve re-accreditation status, the WIU Department of Psychology spent a year of self-study and hosted site visitors from MPCAC earlier in the year. A site visit report was then issued, citing recommendations for further improvements prior to the next re-accreditation cycle.

Founded in 1972, the Clinical/Community Mental Health master's degree at Western has educated and trained nearly 200 graduates who have gone on to provide professional mental health services in a variety of community, private and institutional settings. The program consists of two on-campus years, both in the classroom and under closely supervised experience in the department's Psychology Clinic, followed by a required internship.

Upon completion of the degree program, graduates are eligible to sit for Illinois state licensing exams (Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor).
