History Panel Planned for Oct. 27 at Western

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University Department of History and the Phi Alpha Theta National History Honor Society will host an Election 2016 panel from 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Malpass Library Garden Lounge.
Political Science Professor Janna Deitz will speak on the three main aspects of "political party"-- party in the electorate, party in government and party as organization. Deitz will consider the changing demographic bases of party support, calls for structural reform, and questions about the role of parties in candidate selection in the American election system will be presented.
Political Science Associate Professor Greg Baldi will speak on recent elections and political developments in European countries in comparison with the United States, focusing on the growing disenchantment among voters with mainstream political parties and the rise and electoral fortunes of populist parties on the left (Podemos in Spain, the five-star movement in Italy) and the right (UKIP in Britain, the Alternative for Germany in Germany and the National Front in France, etc.
History Professor Peter Cole will discuss economic matters during the current election cycle with a focus on manufacturing "free trade" and globalization. He will discuss the proposed policies of the two main candidates and the views of different classes of Americans about economic issues.
History Associate Professor Tim Roberts will moderate the discussion.
