Caitlin Pennington (Kirksville, MO) and Benjamin Rogers (Savanna, IL) won first place in the performance category at the Centennial Honors College's 2016 Thomas E. Helm Undergraduate Research Day. Their research, ""Classical vs. Contemporary: A Comparative Analysis of Voice Qualities," was conducted under the supervision of Terry Chasteen, associate professor, music.

Undergraduate Research Day 2016 Award Winners

MACOMB, IL — Several Western Illinois University students earned recognition at the 2016 Centennial Honors College's Thomas E. Helm Undergraduate Research Day this week. Students were honored with first, second and third place awards for their podium and poster presentations and creative performances. The annual event, "A Celebration of Research, Scholarship and Creativity," was held April 20 in the University Union.

Winners in 2016 are listed below.

Poster Presentations

First Place—LeeAnna Carey (Macomb, IL), Taylor Crawford (Griggsville, IL), Kelsey Kirchhoefer (Wildwood, MO) and Marlee Landon (Chandlerville, IL) with Lindsay White, instructor, School of Nursing: "Stethoscope Hygiene between Patients as a Standard Practice"

Second Place—Tyler Czarnecki (Homewood, IL) with P. K. Babu, associate professor, and Saisudha Mallur, assistant professor, physics: "Variation of Optical Band Gap in Lead and Bismuth Borate Glasses"

Third Place—Victoria Kappel (Orland Park, IL) with Stacy Betz, chair, communication sciences and disorders: "Examining the Differences between Conversational Partners When Assessing a Child's Language Sample"

Podium Presentations

First Place—Rebecca Dunterman (Chicago Ridge, IL) with Hiroko Sotozaki, associate professor, psychology: "Attentional Bias and Handedness"

Second Place—Kennen Hutchison (Orion, IL) with Catherine Miller-Hunt, assistant professor, biological sciences: "Mosquito Mayhem: Are Illinois Mosquitoes Ready for Chikungunya Virus?"

Third Place—Jana Berryman (Marseilles, IL) with Colin Harbke, associate professor, and Julie Herbstrith, assistant professor, psychology: "The Acceptance of Public Intimacy between Heterosexual and Homosexual Couples"

Performances

First Place—Caitlin Pennington (Kirksville, MO) and Benjamin Rogers (Savanna, IL) with Terry Chasteen, associate professor, music: "Classical vs. Contemporary: A Comparative Analysis of Voice Qualities"

Second Place—Samantha Flores Guerrero (Tijuana Baja, Mexico), Luciana Hontila (Cluj-Napoca, Romania), Vlad Hontila (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) and Milagros Gallardo Munoz (Quito, Ecuador) with Richard Hughey, associate professor, music: "Working with the Composer"—David Rappenecker's String Quartet no. 2

Third Place—Hannah Drake (Charleston, IL) with Brian Bellott, assistant professor, forensic chemistry: "Historical Perspectives and Applications of a Variety of Harps"

The winners received awards from the WIU Foundation supported by the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Technology, College of Education and Human Services, College of Fine Arts and Communication and University Libraries.
