MACOMB/MOLINE, IL — Six students participating in Western Illinois University's 2015 Spring Undergraduate Commencement Ceremonies May 15-17 in Macomb and in Moline have received the highest recognition from their colleges for their overall academic excellence by being named a College Scholar.

Two other top honorees were named the speakers for the WIU-Macomb and WIU-Quad Cities Academic Honors Convocation ceremonies.

The 2 p.m. Friday, May 15 Academic Honors Convocation in Western Hall will honor College, Departmental and Honors scholars and graduates who have earned academic distinction throughout their Western Illinois University careers. Students will receive a medallion for each honor, which they wear at Commencement ceremonies. Faculty in each of Western Illinois University's four academic colleges; the School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach; and the Centennial Honors College select a graduating senior as the college's outstanding student. Students graduating as College Scholars have satisfied the criteria of excellence established by their individual academic college's faculty members. A Departmental Scholar is an outstanding degree candidate in an academic major as determined by the faculty in the major department. An Honors Scholar is a student in the Centennial Honors College who has completed a set of honors requirements and has achieved a grade point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Approximately 10 percent of graduating seniors achieve academic distinction, which is designed as Summa Cum Laude, highest academic distinction, with a minimum grade point average of 3.90; Magna Cum Laude, high academic distinction, with a GPA of 3.75-3.89; and Cum Laude, academic distinction, with a GPA between 3.60-3.74.

Convocation Speakers

Shealyn Annabelle Ashby (Pekin, IL) is the Convocation speaker for the Macomb ceremony and will deliver her speech, "Stay Hopeful, Stay Humble." She will graduate with a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders, and she is also the Centennial Honors College Scholar and an Honors Scholar. Wendy C. Orman (Le Claire, IA) is the convocation speaker for the WIU-QC ceremony and will deliver her speech, "Life Support." She will graduate with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and is an Honors Scholar.

Centennial Honors College Scholar

Shealyn Annabelle Ashby (Pekin, IL) will graduate with a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders. She is also the WIU-Macomb Convocation speaker, an Honors Scholar and will graduate with high academic distinction, Magna Cum Laude. For her undergraduate honors thesis, Ashby researched the effects researcher/examiner/clinician comments and questions have on the outcome of a client's/child's speech during sample collection. She was a WIU team member in the Student College Trivia Bowl at the Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association annual conference (the team placed third overall). Ashby served as the WIU Swing Dance Club president and vice president, and as a Swing Dance Club member, she volunteered and performed for senior citizens in Macomb. Through her Phi Eta Sigma service, she organized and participated in the Adopt-a-Street program. Ashby plans to attend graduate school to study in the area of speech, language and hearings sciences. She is the daughter of Melanie and Stephen Vice and Rodney Ashby.

College of Arts and Sciences Scholar

Sarah R. Wilcer (Lombard, IL) will graduate with a bachelor's degree in biology. She is also the Biology Departmental Scholar, an Honors Scholar and she will graduate with the highest academic distinction, Summa Cum Laude. Wilcers' honors thesis was based on a study of invasive common carp in Spring Lake (near Macomb). Her research goal was to consider different management strategies for the invasive population. She was inducted into the Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) National Biological Honor Society in Fall 2013, and Wilcer served as the vice president (sophomore year) and president (junior and senior years) of the WIU Zoology Club. Off campus, she has helped organize the Doggie Easter Egg Hunt and the Bow Wow Bash, two events held in Macomb to raise funds for the McDonough County Animal Shelter. She has also volunteered for animal-related organizations, such as the Peoria Zoo, Willowbrook (IL) Wildlife Center, and Wildlife Prairie Park (Hanna City, IL) and Cat Guardians (Lombard, IL). She is currently employed by Campus Recreation as an equipment room attendant. Wilcer plans to attend Clemson University to pursue her master's degree in park, recreation, and tourism management. She is the daughter of Scott and Mary Ann Wilcer.

College of Business and Technology Scholar

Michael Erickson Aitchison (Iowa City, IA) will graduate with a bachelor's degree in economics. He is also the Economics Departmental Scholar, an Honors Scholar and he will graduate with the highest academic distinction, Summa Cum Laude. Aitchison is a member of the Economics Student Association at Western and the Golden Key International Honor Society. He also plays in Western's Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble. Off campus, he is a member of Macomb Rotaract. Aitchison plans to pursue a master's degree in public policy, and he is the son of Sue and Randall Aitchison.

College of Education and Human Services Scholar

Hannah Marie Cecil (Maquon, IL) will graduate with a bachelor's degree in recreation, park and tourism administration. She is also the Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration Departmental Scholar and will graduate with high academic distinction, Magna Cum Laude. She is a member of Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society and served as the programming outreach chair for Western's Mortar Board chapter. In that role, she helped with the "Dickens on the Square" event in Macomb. She is also a member of Rho Phi Lambda, the national honor fraternity for students studying parks and recreation. Cecil also served on the retention and recruitment committee for WIU's Relay for Life event, which raises funds for the American Cancer Society. In 2014, she represented Western on the student advisory board for the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association, and she is an active member of the Texas Recreation and Parks Society. Cecil also completed an internship in Missouri City (TX) and volunteered for Mosaic (Macomb) while attending WIU. She is the daughter of Kyle and Staci Cecil.

College of Fine Arts and Communication Scholar

Cally L. Keefauver (Astoria, IL) will graduate with a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders. She is also the Communication Sciences and Disorders Departmental Scholar, an Honors Scholar and will graduate with highest academic distinction, Summa Cum Laude. She served as president of the WIU Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (WIUSSLHA) and volunteered for the Macomb Walk to End Alzheimer's Disease. Keefauver also took part in Best Buddies International, a "nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and served as the chapter president for Western's chapter. For an Undergraduate Research Day project, she presented a research study on hearing loss in marching band students, and her undergraduate thesis work involved present diagnostic methods regarding specific language impairment. She plans to attend graduate school at the University of Iowa to study speech language pathology. She is the daughter of Jeff Keefauver and Rona McCoy.

School of Distance Learning, International Studies and Outreach Scholar

Debra Kay Streeter (Peoria, IL) will graduate with a bachelor's degree in general studies and with academic distinction, Cum Laude. Streeter has served as a Girl Scout leader since 2007, and as a volunteer at her church for more than 10 years. She has also served as the president (2008-10 and 2014-15) of her local Parent Teacher Organization. She has worked in the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services for more than 27 years. For the past 17 years, she has provided training to Illinois circuit court clerks about her employer's program and its polices and procedures. In April 2014, Street was inducted into the Western's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
