WIU's Lutz Part of National Juried Art Exhibit

MACOMB, IL – Regional artist Deb Lutz, an office manager in the Western Illinois University Department of Geography, is displaying a piece of her artwork in the national juried art competition GALEX49 at the Galesburg Civic Art Center.

Lutz's work, "Sunrise Headdress," was accepted into the competition, which runs from March 14-April 11. The Galesburg Civil Art Center is located at 114 E. Main St. in Galesburg, IL.

The medium of Lutz's work is "fractals," which designs an image using fractal-generating software that creates a pattern of geometric figures. The figures reveal greater complexity as it is enlarged and many of the images can model natural phenomena, such as coastlines, snowflakes and mountains.

Lutz does freelance graphic design work and has worked in many artistic disciplines, including needle arts, Ukrainian eggs, floral and garden design, quilting, ceramics, painting, jewelry-making, beadwork and digital fractal design. She received her bachelor's degree from WIU in 2005 in graphic communication.

GALEX is made up of the words "Galesburg" and "exhibit," and it's celebrating its 49th year. More than 50 works are chosen for the exhibition and more than $2,500 in prizes are awarded.

The juror for this year's event is artist Preston Jackson, the head of the figurative area and a professor of sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also owns the Raven Gallery, home of the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, March 14 at the art center.
