WIU Journalism Professor Publishes Four-Volume Book, "America in the Eyes of Yong Tang"

MACOMB, IL - Western Illinois University journalism and media law Professor Yong Tang recently published a four-volume book, "America in the Eyes of Yong Tang."

The People's Daily Press, one of China's prestigious presses, published Tang's Chinese-language book in Beijing. The book was based on his reporting and writing experiences while he served, for four years, as the Washington, DC-based correspondent for a major Chinese newspaper, "The People's Daily."

The first volume, "Face-to-Face Dialogues with U.S. Political and Business Leaders," focuses on Tang's exclusive interviews with U.S. political and business leaders, such as former president Jimmy Carter and CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. The second volume, "One-on-One Conversations with U.S. Cultural and Educational Elites," showcases Tang's one-on-one chats with U.S. leaders in academia and culture, such as Ivy League presidents and top-notch professors.

The third volume, "Stories behind Stories," features Tang's in-depth analysis of news events and hot button issues pertaining to various aspects of American society. The fourth volume, "Places Where News Breaks," brings readers to a wide variety of U.S. locations where news often breaks.

Tang said Chinese readers have tremendous interest in America, the world's only superpower, but many Chinese-language books about United States tend to either romanticize or demonize the country. He added that when writing "America in the Eyes of Yong Tang," he wanted to portray America in a more balanced and nuanced manner.

Tang's major areas of research are First Amendment, freedom of information, media law and policy, international journalism, global media studies, Chinese press and politics. He teaches media law and journalism skills courses.

Tang's awards and honors include Western Illinois University Professional Achievement Award (2014), Faces of Penn State (2013), Top 50 Journalism Professors from Journalismdegree.org (2012), AEJMC First Place Faculty Paper Award (2012), AEJMC Best Research Scholar-to-Scholar Presentation Award (2011), Penn State University Gene and Fran Goodwin Journalism Scholarship (2010), Penn State University Graduate Fellowship (2009), George Washington University Freeman Fellowship (2007) and China News Awards (2004).

Before joining the WIU faculty, Tang worked as an award-winning professional journalist for nearly 15 years for the "People's Daily," the largest and most politically influential newspaper in the People's Republic of China. From 2004 to 2007, Tang worked as a residential correspondent in the newspaper's Washington, D.C. bureau.
