Athletic Training Students Celebrate Athletic Training Month with Video, Fundraiser

MACOMB, IL - - Western Illinois University athletic training students have been busy this month. The National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) has designated March as National Athletic Training Month (NATM), and to celebrate and commemorate this year's theme, "Not all athletes wear jerseys. Athletic trainers treat the athlete in you," students studying in the kinesiology department's Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) produced a short music video that tells the "story all about how athletic training turns your life around."

"The video is a creative and fun way for the students to share how athletic trainers help athletes, as well as other individuals who are recovering from injuries," said Jennifer Plos, assistant professor and clinical coordinator for WIU's ATEP. "Our students also put together a display case and two bulletin board displays in Brophy Hall to promote the month and the profession," she said.

On Monday, March 7 students from WIU's ATEP and the Athletic Training Student Association (ATSA) met with Macomb Mayor Mick Wisslead at City Hall for the annual Mayor's Proclamation for National Athletic Training Month in Macomb. Attending the ceremony were Erskine Smith, WIU College of Education and Human Services associate dean for administration; Dana Moon, COEHS marketing and community relations director; Janet Wigglesworth; chair of WIU's kinesiology department; Renee Polubinsky, ATEP program director; Plos; and 23 WIU athletic training students.

To conclude the celebration of National Athletic Training Month, the ATSA is hosting a NATM Bowling Fundraiser from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at the University Union Bowling Alley. The event is open to all WIU students, faculty and staff, along with any friends and family. The cost is $10 per person for two hours of bowling and shoe rental, and proceeds from the event will be donated to the Newborns in Need organization. Newborns in Need is a charity organized to take care of sick and needy babies and their families.

Registration/payment is due by 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, in Brophy Hall 220. Entry forms are also available in Brophy Hall 220 on the WIU Macomb campus.
