MACOMB, IL – The Department of Financial Institutions in Springfield has approved expansion of the membership base of the Western Illinois Credit Union to include Western Illinois University students.

According to Richard Helmers, credit union president, this expansion, coupled with the new location on University Drive near Western’s University Services Building, will help the Western Illinois Credit Union serve the Macomb community better than before.

“We will now be able to offer our services to both current and past WIU students. Even if an individual has completed just one course at Western, he or she qualifies for credit union membership,” Helmers said.

Chartered in 1959, the Western Illinois Credit Union originally served only Western faculty and staff. This changed in 1984 when membership was expanded to include all employees of the McDonough County School system. The latest expansion allows membership for both current and former employees and WIU students. Immediate family members including parents, children and siblings may also join with the qualified member.

As a member of the Credit Union National Association and the Illinois Credit Union League, the Western Illinois Credit Union is part of a growing number of member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives organized solely to meet the needs of their members. All "profits" are returned to members in the form of higher savings rates, lower loan rates and fewer service fees. There are more than 80 million credit union members nationwide.

“Simply put, a lot of people have recognized the benefits offered by credit unions. That’s why membership is growing,” Helmers added.

For more information about membership in the Western Illinois Credit Union, visit the new facility at 322 W. University Drive or call 309/298-2986.
