MACOMB, IL -- The Civil Service Employees Council (CSEC) at Western Illinois University is pleased to announce John Owens, golf course grounds superintendent at Western’s Harry Mussatto Golf Course, has been selected as the November Civil Service Employee of the Month.

Owens was acknowledged by his nominators for his expertise and experience for the expansion of the course from nine to 18 holes, as well as the addition of the new practice facility. According to the nominators, the excellent condition of the golf course at such a “young age” is attributed to Owens’ persistence, long hours of hard work and his knowledge and expertise of golf course turf
management. He provides ongoing training sessions for his workers to learn new skills to improve their performance and serves as a tremendous role model for his staff, student employees and all who see him work on the course. Owens was named grounds superintendent in February 2000.

“John’s commitment to the Mussatto Golf Course and to the University is evident when you view the superb condition of the course,” said Paula Stull, CSEC public relations officer. “His hard work and expertise makes Western’s course a premier facility.”

Western faculty, staff and administrators, as well as community members, wishing to nominate a civil service employee for this recognition should call Stull at 309/298-1967 or e-mail PL-Stull@wiu.edu.
