MACOMB, IL – Casa Latina at Western Illinois University will host the program, "Define American: Thanking Our Immigrants" from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov 21 in the WIU Multicultural Center.

According to Jasmine Navarro, Casa Latina graduate assistant, "Define American: Thanking Our Immigrants" is a combination of two Casa programs, which is designed for participants to consider what American means to them, while honoring the legacy of those who come to America with the hope for a better life.

"I appreciate this event because we don't always get a chance to show our gratitude to those who were brave enough to immigrate, for the sake of their family. This event allows us a chance to show others that the immigration that is in our bloodline does not lessen us as Americans," said Anthony Gomez, programming chair of United Greek Council at WIU. "We can voice how we feel within and empower how we are the only ones who can give or take away labels from ourselves. 'Define American: Thanking Our Immigrants' gives power to our immigrants, our cultures and our voices."

WIU graduate Marco Espinosa added that as an undergraduate at Western, he appreciated the event as it gave people a different perspective on who is American.

"The program shows how despite being born, here we all have different experiences based on the color of our skin," he said.

"Define American: Thanking Our Immigrants" welcomes performances by students, faculty, staff and community members. For more information, contact Navarro at ja-navarro@wiu.edu.
