MACOMB, IL -- The Multicultural Center (MCC) at Western Illinois University will host its annual open house from noon-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. There will be an open forum with Acting WIU President Martin Abraham at 3:30 p.m. at the MCC.

The open house will feature a display of all of the student organizations that are advised under the MCC umbrella, performances throughout the event, refreshments and music. The event is also a chance for students to connect to the center and meet fellow students and center staff. This year, the MCC welcomes the addition of the LGBT*QA Resource Center.

"The addition of the LGBT*QA Resource Center to the Multicultural Center could not come at a better time as August 2019 will mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the MCC," said Casa Latina Director Rocio Ayard Ochoa. "We welcome students of all social identities, and the addition of the LGBT*QA Resource Center amplifies our goal."

Also, the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

"The rich history that exists is the fabric of the MCC," said Ayard Ochoa.

The MCC is home to the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, Casa Latina Cultural Center, LGBT*QA Resource Center and the Women's Center. The center is unique in that it is the first building on Western's Macomb campus to be constructed under green standards, including a grass roof.

Ayard Ochoa added, the MCC's central location on campus gives the Casa Latina Cultural Center, the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, the LGBT*QA Resource Center and the Women's Center unique opportunities to enhance their goals of providing educational, social and cultural programs. The centers within the MCC provide resources that help focus the campus community's awareness and appreciation of racial, ethnic and gender diversity. The overall goal of the MCC is to be "inclusively inviting and intentionally recognizing."
