MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Professor Emeritus J. Q. Adams will lead the discussion, "Cutting Through the Clutter to Understand Race, Class and Gender" from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25 in the Leslie F. Malpass Library, Room 180, on the Macomb campus.

In keeping with his belief in Brazilian philosopher Paulo Freire's mandate to "stay unfinished," Adams has been researching the many phases of cultural diversity from multiple lenses during his long career as a multicultural educator.

Adams will discuss 'Nonviolent Communication' as a model to help bridge perceived differences and enhance interactions with others.

"The model, identified most closely with Dr. Marshall Rosenberg who developed it as a way to create 'compassionate connections in the home, in the workplace and in other social spaces, is based on recognizing needs, our own as well as those of other people," Adams explained. "We will look at how recognizing our shared human needs can serve as the basis of empathy and effective communication across lines of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and class."

"Cutting Through the Clutter" is sponsored by the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Research (CITR) at WIU.
