MACOMB, IL – Students from 33 high schools participated in the 2018 Western Illinois University Greenhand Conference Sept. 6 at Macomb High School, sponsored by the University's Collegiate FFA (CFFA) chapter.

The motivational conference is for first-year FFA members in the region. The conference's theme was adopted from the Illinois FFA Convention, "Be Bold."

Students attend three workshops focused on supervised agricultural experience opportunities, career development events and FFA general information. At this conference, students interacted with members from the CFFA/AgEd/PAS club at WIU, as well as with Illinois FFA State Officers and Section 11 FFA officers.

This event was hosted to introduce and educate high school age students about the opportunities available through being active in the national FFA Organization.

"We revamped the conference this year and focused on the student's preferences from previous years," said Morgan Lemley, CFFA/AgEd/PAS president and a WIU senior agriculture education major from Monmouth. "It was our goal to leave students enthusiastic and excited to get involved in the national FFA organization."

This the club has hosted the Greenhand Conference for high school students in the area for several years. Event sponsors included Hart's Nursery, Rabo Finance, Illinois Farm Bureau and Fulton Farm Services.

The national FFA organization (formerly known as Future Farmers of America) provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education. Today, there are 653,359 FFA members in grades seven through 12 who belong to one of 8,568 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
