Latinx Heritage Month Celebration Planned at WIU

MACOMB, IL – The Casa Latina Cultural Center at Western Illinois University will celebrate Latinx Heritage Month through October.

Numerous events are planned as part of the commemoration, including:

September

• Thursday, Sept. 13, 6:30 p.m.: Latinx Womxn Empowerment Panel, Multicultural Center
– The event is a discussion led by Latinx womxn on empowerment, solidarity and sisterhood. The event is sponsored by Gamma Phi Omega and the WIU Women's Center.

• Friday, Sept. 14, 6:30-8 p.m.: Viva la Independencia! at the Multicultural Center – Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with a presentation, arts and crafts, music and food. The event is sponsored by Lambda Theta Alpha.

Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.: Mariachi Flor de Toloache at the College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC) Recital Hall - Both performances of this Latin Grammy winning ensemble are open free to the public. The event is sponsored by Amplify, Casa Latina, the WIU Community Music School, CSAF, LASO, Tradición and the WIU Women's Center.

• Thursday, Sept. 20, 5-7 p.m.: "What Is Colorism?" at the Multicultural Center – Information about colorism and its effects within social media and on beauty standards will be provided. The event is sponsored by Sigma Lambda Gamma.

• Tuesday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m.: WIU Homecoming V-Show at Western Hall – The Tradición Latin Dance Team will perform.

• Saturday, Sept. 29, 10:30 a.m.: WIU Homecoming Parade – Casa Latina representatives will walk in the parade.


October

• Wednesday, Oct. 3, 4:30-7 p.m.: Bring Your Own Tortilla (BYOT), Multicultural Center lawn - Meat will be provided and vegetarian options will be available. The event is sponsored by Casa Latina.

• Friday, Oct. 5, 4-9 p.m.: Tradición Black Light Social – The Tradición Latin Dance Team will sponsor this opportunity to learn salsa and bachata. The free event will include social dancing.

• Wednesday, Oct. 17, 7-9 p.m.: National Love Your Body Day - Multicultural Center – An interactive panel will be presented by Beautiful in Every Shade. The event is sponsored by Casa Latina, the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center and the WIU Women's Center.
