WIU Mathematics Conference April 13 to Feature National Speakers

MACOMB, IL -- Western Illinois University's Department of Mathematics will host the 67th annual Mathematics Teachers' Conference from 8:30 a.m. - 2:50 p.m. Friday, April 13 in Morgan and Horrabin halls.

This year's keynote speaker is Robert Q. Berry, III of the University of Virginia. Berry is the president-elect of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and a professor in the Curry School of Education, with an appointment in curriculum instruction and special education.

Berry will first deliver "#blackkidsdomath: Discussing Black Boys Who Are Successful with School Mathematics," at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in Morgan Hall 109. This lecture is sponsored by the WIU departments of mathematics, history and liberal arts and sciences.

Berry will also deliver the conference's opening address, "Catalyzing Change: Identity, Agency, Positionality and Equitable Instructional Practices" at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 13 in Morgan Hall 109.

Berry has extensive experiences in classroom observation and is the lead developer of an observation instrument, Mathematics Scan, which measures standards-based mathematics teaching practices. Currently, Berry is engaged in research unpacking the mathematics teaching strategies of African American men who teach mathematics. He has published more than 100 articles, book chapters and proceedings.

The conference's closing address will be delivered by Reggie Duncan, a fifth-grade mathematics and science teacher from Wingate Elementary School in Shiloh, IL. He is the 2016 ICTM Excellence in Elementary Mathematics award winning and was a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2016. He will deliver "Structure is All Around Us: Composing and Decomposing Fractions and Hip-Hop!?!" at 2 p.m. in Morgan Hall 109.

The conference will also include a variety of mathematics-related speakers.
