WIU Students and Faculty Win National Broadcasting Awards

MACOMB, IL -- Students and faculty in the Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting and Journalism have won four top awards in the 78th annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Awards.

The winners were announced Saturday, March 3 at the IBS international conference in New York, NY.

Students, and a faculty member working with NEWS3, the department's student-produced news organization, took all four awards:

Best TV Sports Report: Danny Frey, of Springfield, IL, for his sports segment in NEWS3 "Live at 4" on Oct. 24, 2017. Frey graduated in December 2017.

Best Sports Director: Frey, NEWS3

Best Use of YouTube: Emily Kenney, a junior broadcasting major, of Farmington, IL, for her management of the NEWS3-WIU YouTube page.

Best Faculty Advisor: Jasmine Crighton, NEWS3

WIU students and alumni nominated for awards this year include:

Best TV Newscast: Alumna Emily Manley, of Highland, IL; senior broadcasting major Redrick Terry, of Rock Island, IL, and alumni Devin Biggs, of Lincoln, IL, and Jason Chauvin, of Des Plaines, IL, for the NEWS3 "Live at 4" newscast on April 20, 2017. Manley, Biggs and Chauvin graduated in 2017.

Best News Report:
Alumni Megan Sanchez, of Bettendorf, IA, and Ryan Garity, of Crystal Lake, IL, for a NEWS3 Special Report: "Jacob's Story." The news report features Jacob Bowen, the first person in his family to get a cochlear implant. Bowen attended WIU to pursue a degree in agriculture. Sanchez and Garity graduated in 2017.

Best Station Promotion (Video/TV):
Senior broadcasting majors John Benedeck, of McHenry, IL, Baylee Brynteson, of Woodstock, GA, and Kenney were nominated for a promotional series called "Get to Know the NEWS3 Team."

Best Specialty Music Show:
Raul Villalobos, IV, of Waukegan, IL, for his show "Reckless at Seven" on WIUS 88.3FM.

Best Use of Twitter: NEWS3

Best College TV Station:
NEWS3
