MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University Associate Professor of Communication Christopher Carpenter has been recognized as one of the top 1 percent of the most productive communication scholars.

The designation was made by an article in the journal Communication Education, which examined the frequency of publication by scholars in 24 communication-related academic journals between 2012-2016. Carpenter published nine scholarly articles during that time period.

"It was really exciting to find out that I had been included in the list of the most productive communication scholars," said Carpenter. "There were many scholars on that list who I have long looked up to and it was an honor to see my name among theirs. My department and my college have been very supportive of my research. I could not have done it without research partners in my own department, around the country and in Europe."

Carpenter's research interests include social influence and close relationships in online and offline contexts using field studies, lab experiments, surveys and meta-analyses. At Western, he teaches courses on social influence, interpersonal communication, quantitative research methods and statistics, computer-mediated communication and communication theory.

In 2016, Carpenter was chosen to deliver the Wayne N. Thompson Lecture, "Using Social Network Analysis to Understand Who Becomes Popular in a First-Year Residence Hall." Carpenter was awarded the 2013 and 2016 College of Fine Arts and Communication's (COFAC) Scholarly Activity Award and the Provost's Award for Excellence in Scholarly Activity for 2016. He was also invited to participate in a debate about the value of social media in 2012 at the Oxford Union at Oxford University.
