WIU School of Ag Hosts 'Girls' Night on the Farm' Nov. 7

MACOMB, IL - "Girls' Night on the Farm," took place Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Western Illinois University Livestock Center.

The event, for members of WIU sororities, offered firsthand experiences with pigs and sheep, as well as the opportunity to receive answers to common consumer questions. The event was held to inform and educate women on how agriculture impacts their daily lives.

Sixty-two women were in attendance, as well as multiple volunteers and coordinator Lindsey O'Hara, a junior agriculture major from Claypool, IN.

"I was excited to have so many women come to the event.," said O'Hara. "I believe these kinds of firsthand experiences will bridge the disconnect consumers have with the agriculture industry."

During the event, the women were split into groups and traveled to stations that included pigs, sheep and a survey and common consumer questions.

"I learned a lot while by being at the event," said Tori Wolfer, a member of Delta Zeta. "I personally don't let labels sway me from buying certain food, but I did learn a lot more."

The event was planned as part of the College Aggies Online Contest, and results of the contest will be released Nov. 27.
