MOLINE, IL -- Jose Soto, an expert on cultural diversity, will speak at Western Illinois University-Quad Cities on the challenges and benefits of diversity in the university and Quad Cities communities at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in Riverfront Hall Rooms 103/104.

Soto's presentation, sponsored by the QC Cultural Alliance at WIU-QC as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, will include topics such as preparing students to be part a multicultural society; acknowledging and eliminating racism, prejudice, and other discriminatory behaviors; and recognizing the benefits of diversity in the workplace and student population.

Soto, who serves as vice president for access, equity, and diversity at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, NE, has more than 20 years of experience with issues of affirmative action, access, equity, and diversity, according to the college's web site.

"Soto's presentation involves the general topic of diversity, but more specifically his experience as an educator and the work he continues to do at Southeastern in promoting diversity and inclusion through his department and on his campus, a mission we have in common here at WIU-QC," said Cameron Ruiz, student emissary for the Quad Cities Cultural Alliance. "Our mission in the QC Cultural Alliance at WIU-QC is to support an inclusive and diverse campus environment."
