MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois University chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) has been recognized as a Certified Gold Star Chapter for the 2016-17 academic year.

NSCS is a national, not-for-profit, honor society that recognizes undergraduate students who excel academically during their first and second year of college. Nationally, the organization offers $1 million in scholarships, awards and chapter support, as well as leadership and service opportunities.

The Certified Gold Star Chapter certification recognizes the work the WIU chapter has put into developing its program and its commitment to the ideals of NSCS.

WIU senior elementary education major Shyanne Thomas, of Colchester, IL serves as the chapter president.

"My officer team, members and myself worked very hard this past year to show our pride and commitment in NSCS and Western Illinois University," said Thomas. "We will continue to hold NCSC and Western Illinois University values and ideas at the forefront of our organization."

To be invited into NSCS, students must rank in the top 20 percent of their class and have a grade point average of 3.4 or above. The faculty advisor for the WIU chapter is WIU Department of History Chair Jennifer McNabb.

"I am delighted by this well-deserved honor for the WIU Chapter of NSCS," said McNabb. "The awarding of Gold Star status serves as a fitting recognition of the dedication of the WIU student NSCS members and the high-quality programming they provide the campus and Macomb community. I look forward to an excellent year with the chapter in 2017-2018, as we welcome a new class of exceptional student scholars."
