WIU Opera Workshop Culminates in Performance of 'Hansel and Gretel'

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois University's School of Music will offer an opera workshop class during the Fall 2017 semester that will culminate with the May 2018 stage production of Engelbert Humperdinck's opera, "Hansel and Gretel."

The class and auditions for the opera are open to students from any academic area. The performance will be conducted by WIU Associate Professor of Music Richard Hughey and directed by Associate Professor of Music Ricardo Sepulveda-Rodriguez.

MUS109: Opera Workshop will begin with an informational meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22 in Browne Hall, 130. Auditions will then take place from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 in Browne Hall, 130. A sign-up sheet is available on the opera bulletin board in the Browne Hall lobby.

The opera workshop class meets from 3-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays during the fall semester and is worth one credit hour. During the semester, students will practice the fundamentals of stage movement and lyric theatre styles while perfecting their own skills and talents.

Performance of "Hansel and Gretel" will be held May 4-5 in Hainline Theatre.
