WIU Alumnus Awarded 2016 Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship

MACOMB, IL – Recent Western Illinois University alumnus Nicholas Breslin, a May graduate with a degree in physics, has been awarded a $5,000 fellowship from The Honors Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Breslin was also awarded a fellowship from the WIU chapter during the April initiation ceremony. He will use the awards to pursue his doctoral degree at Michigan State University.

"We are really excited about Nick Breslin getting a $5,000 PKP Fellowship award," said WIU Phi Kappa Phi President Michael Romano, a professor in the University's Department of Biological Sciences. "Our chapter consistently showcases talented students by giving out thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards each year. Nick was one of 51 students nationally to receive a coveted $5,000 fellowship award and it is a tribute to him, as well as to the kind of students we have here at Western.  I congratulate Nicholas on this outstanding accomplishment."

In addition to the honors from Phi Kappa Phi, Breslin was a member of WIU's Centennial Honors College, was the Honors College Scholar and received an honorable mention for the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship.

Since its creation in 1932, the fellowship program has become one of the society's most visible and financially well-supported endeavors, allocating $345,000 annually to deserving students for first-year graduate or professional study. Currently, 51 fellowships of $5,000, and six of $15,000, are awarded each year.

The selection process for the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship is based on the applicants' evidence of graduate potential, undergraduate academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement of educational perspective and career goals and acceptance at an approved graduate or professional program.

In addition to the Fellowship Program, Phi Kappa Phi awards more than $1 million each biennium to qualifying students and members through undergraduate study abroad grants, grants for literacy initiatives, and member and chapter awards.
