WIU Broadcasting Students Win National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America Student Awards

MACOMB, IL – Students in Western Illinois University's Department of Broadcasting and Journalism have won three Student Television Awards and four honorable mentions in the 2017 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America Student Awards competition. 

The student winners will receive a Crystal Pillar award at the 41st Mid-America Emmy gala in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 9.

Senior broadcasting majors Emily Manley, of Highland, IL; Megan Sanchez, of Bettendorf, IA, and Dan White of La Grange Highlands, IL, won for outstanding newscast for their work on the student-produced newscast, NEWS3 "Live at 4" from Nov. 17, 2016. The 30-minute live production contained live reports from Canton, IL, one day after a major gas explosion downtown. Manley worked as the reporter in Canton, while Sanchez served as producer, and White directed the production.

Manley also won for outstanding general assignment reporting in serious news. 

Sanchez won for outstanding general assignment reporting in light news. Additionally, videographer-editors Ryan Garity, of Crystal Lake, IL, and Emily Kenney, of Farmington, IL, are named in the award.

Students on the NEWS3 staff were also awarded honorable mention in the newscast category for the "Live at Four," which aired Oct. 4, 2016. Manley, Sanchez and Kenney are named in that award.

Manley was awarded honorable mention for outstanding general assignment reporting in light news.

Three students were awarded honorable mention for outstanding sports – live event. Senior broadcasting majors Redrick Terry, of Rock Island, IL, White and junior broadcasting major Danny Frey, of Springfield, IL, were named in this award for the WIU vs. Northern Arizona football broadcast.

For outstanding sports program, "Local Sports Focus," a program created in Fall 2016 by Manley, Frey and Terry was awarded honorable mention.

The purpose of the Mid-America Student Awards competition is to recognize outstanding student achievements in television production. Students compete in the Mid-America region which includes television markets primarily in Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois and surrounding DMAs.
