MACOMB, IL -- A newly-established law enforcement-related committee at Western Illinois University, comprised of student organization representatives and campus and area law enforcement agencies, will host a campus safety training event from 3-5 p.m. Monday, March 27 in the University Union Capitol Room.

Led by officers from the WIU Office of Public Safety (OPS) and the Macomb Police Department, the event will focus on ALICE (alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate) and Run, Hide, Fight active shooter training. All members of the campus community are invited to attend.

"We look forward to building better relationships between our students and area police agencies," said WIU Student Government Association President Dovile Svirupskaite.

According to Svirupskaite, the committee plans to host more events in the future to educate the Western Illinois population on important law enforcement issues.

"When we were approached by campus student organizations about an idea to providing training to the students on current trends in policing, safety and more, Macomb Chief Curt Barker, and I were on board to support the idea," said OPS Director Scott Harris. "These positive interactions between law enforcement and our University community will further strengthen our community policing efforts throughout campus and within the city."

Harris noted that the student leaders are to be commended for their willingness to become involved in forming partnerships and working together to promote positive police community relations. OPS Sgt. Derek Watts added that Western's reputation as a premier law enforcement institution also provides an ideal opportunity for a committee such as this to be formed and provide training.

"While these programs provide the chance to increase awareness for all members of our campus community, they also provide excellent opportunities for Western's law enforcement and justice administration students to get even more experience prior to going into the field following graduation," Watts said.
